After our week spent in the South of Morocco we caught a coach back to Marrakech to spend our final day in Morocco before catching our return flight home. Whilst we stayed in Marrakech we stayed within the city medina in Riads, or “small palaces”. These buildings are built around a centre courtyard with all the windows facing into it. It is rather odd when walking round the medina as none of the buildings have windows facing onto the streets, instead they all face in, to their courtyard. The first Riad we stayed at was Riad Essaada, which is where we stayed when we first arrived in Marrakech. We had a lovely room and were served breakfast in the courtyard each morning. The courtyard featured a lounging area with sofas, along with a dipping pool and a games corner, where my boyfriend spent many hours beating me at chess. We would have very happily returned to the same Riad for our last night, but sadly when we came back to Marrakech it had entered its peak season, pushing the room price above our budget. So on our return to Marrakech we stayed at Riad Dar Khmissa, this was located on a different side of the medina, but like Riad Essaada was located very near to the main square Jemaa el Fna. Breakfast was again included in our room price but was this time served on the Riad’s roof terrace. I really liked staying in the Riads and being within the medina was a great location for us, we were able to walk everywhere we needed mainly the main square and tourist attractions and if we were going further afield there were plenty of petit taxis to be caught just off the main square.
