20140710-194959-71399746.jpgDuring the summer I love going to barbecues, (weather permitting) and this year I will be able to take homemade charcoal along as my offering. My boyfriend learnt how to make charcoal during his training to be a tree surgeon and so we decided to give it ago ourselves. I took quite a lot of photos of the process so thought I would spread them out over several posts so they didn’t get too bogged down with them! Starting with an oil drum you remove most of the top, leaving a lip and completely remove the bottom, this becomes the lid for the top. Set the oil drum on bricks and fill the bottom with newspaper and kindling, we also fitted some chicken wire to the bottom of the oil drum to stop everything falling straight through. Then tightly pack your oil drum with logs, add a splash of diesel/petrol (we wanted to make sure it burnt well) and its ready to begin the burn…
